Project overview

Checkology is the News Literacy Project's learning platform. Teachers use it to bring media literacy into the classroom. We built what runs underneath it: the move from Laravel Forge to AWS, a split data layer, and automated roster imports for whole school districts.

A classroom platform does two jobs at once. It has to stay quick for teachers and students during the school day, and it has to take in huge roster files when a new district signs on. Checkology needed to leave Laravel Forge for a containerized AWS setup, and a dependable way to load and update district rosters.

Checkology AWS architecture: Nginx load balancer, Laravel on Docker, Amazon RDS read replicas and Redis cluster
Checkology Word Wall screen with React front end and Elasticsearch search
District roster sync: about 10,000 students and 1,200 teachers per queued batch into Checkology

Daily classroom traffic and district-wide imports, each on its own path.

01. From Forge to AWS
We moved the Laravel app onto AWS, running in Docker behind an Nginx load balancer.
02. A split data layer
Amazon RDS with read replicas handles database traffic. A Redis cluster takes sessions and caching.
03. District rosters in sync
Queued, batched jobs import about 10,000 students and 1,200 teachers per batch. A daily sync keeps school records current after the first import.
04. Operations in view
CloudWatch alerting watches the application stack and sends alerts, so the team sees issues as they happen.
