Project overview

Zameen.com connects property buyers, sellers and agencies across Pakistan. We worked on the systems behind that experience. We moved core modules from legacy PHP to Laravel, built the APIs behind web and mobile, replaced search, and owned the module agencies use to buy listing boosts.

A property platform is more than its search page. The backend carries listing discovery, the mobile apps, agency workflows, media uploads and paid promotion. Parts of it ran on legacy PHP modules, repeated database queries and MySQL-based search, and the services behind the website and mobile apps needed extending.

Also in scope: automated listing moderation, Arabic localisation, direct-to-S3 uploads and performance tracking in New Relic. For context, the platform sees 5.5M+ monthly visits and 20M+ listings, and about 15,000 agencies use the upsell module. These figures describe the platform, not results of our work, and this case study covers selected backend contributions, not the whole Zameen platform.

The work sat behind the screens: core modules, APIs, search and agency payments.

01. Modernising the core
We migrated core modules from legacy PHP to Laravel and removed N+1 query patterns, cutting repeated database calls in the affected flows.
02. One API layer for web and mobile
We built about 50 REST endpoints for the website and mobile apps, authenticated with Laravel Sanctum.
03. Search, rebuilt
We replaced MySQL-based search with Laravel Scout and Elasticsearch, so search runs on a dedicated engine with Laravel as the integration layer.
04. Listing boosts for agencies
We owned the upsell module about 15,000 agencies use to buy listing boosts, with transactional payment handling behind each purchase.
